I see your point , ambience does contribute a lot to the horror factor. I guess i was biased on my horror definition from watching way too many Dario D'Argento's movies.

Truth be told though , movies labelled as "horror" nowadays are becoming less horror and more action'esque , for example when Van Helsing premiered , everyone was saying it was a horror movie , and in my opinion it just flopped really bad on that facet from watching the trailer... Its really really hard for me to find one recent movie thats labelled as horror , that actually manages to get that uneasyness feeling on the audience. Sure i guess everyone has different degrees of sensibility , and i guess thats what makes people label "Horror" on a movie that wouldnt even pass as a comedy flic.

Yeah but just because the general public labels something a horror movie (and just because something has vampires in it), doesn't make it horror. Likewise, just because something is a terrible movie and doesn't manage to be scary, doesn't make it NOT horror. For example, some horror movies are so terrible that they become comic, but that doesn't make them comedies. It's about what the movie sets out to do, though you're definitely right about most modern horror movies failing to create scares.

Exactly , like i said , its all up to different degrees of the beholders' sensibility to horror. Whats horror to some people makes other people yawn. Im speaking for myself at least when i wish the whole concept of "horror" would be redefined to accomodate the tastes of a broader population. Im not sure if thats even possible , since not everyone is the same obviously , so its just an utopic dream i suppose.

What I'm saying though is that horror is NOT at the mercy of every viewer. If a movie is made to be a horror movie, then it will always be a horror movie... even if the audience doesn't end up finding it very horrific. I do get where you're coming from though.

Your sig reminded me how even a lengedary trilogy like the Evil Dead saga can be horrifying , even if its meant to be a comedy down at heart . I remember watching Dead by Dawn when i was like , 11 or so , and that cabin always managed to freak me out sometimes despite me having watching it over a gazillion times ; i must say with a shy look on my face that Ash was one of my childhood heroes , not because he was just cool , but mostly because of his tongue-and-cheek witty lines. We could definately use more movies of that caliber into the horror section , serious tone or not.

Now that's one thing I can definitely agree with you on! The Evil Dead trilogy is my all-time favorite horror saga, and Ash is my all-time favorite character... so there's no shame in admitting he was one of your childhood heroes. Ash is the man, and yes, his amazing dialogue will always make me laugh. If only Bruce Campbell/ Sam Raimi felt up to doing an Evil Dead 4, I would see that in a heartbeat. I love tongue-in-cheek horror.

Classic.

My favorite scene is in Evil Dead 2 when everything in the house starts laughing.

Heh, maybe you'll get a chance to re-watch them this weekend? Sorry to remind you of their awesomeness at a bad time.

Amen! I don't mind CG if it's done well... but at this point, it's just OVERdone. I mean even a lot of slasher movies end up with it! How pointless is that??
