Default Purpose and meaning behind the whispers

I realize that this is not the first post having to do with the whispers in this game. I did some looking and decided that I was not going to bring it up unless I found something new. I think that I did.

originally I only heard the whispers in the bathroom of chapter 1. I started playing this game with headphones and it opened a whole new side of things for me. For starters, there are many areas in this game that feature the whispers. Secondly, there are different "people" whispering and thus are only present in certain places. In some cases there are multiple overlaps. The most memorable overlap would be the beginning lobby of Chapter 10.

1. The female voice - Backlog on Jane Cothia, ship phrases, and psycho babble eluding to why Isaac "sees" and obeys" things.
2. The other female voice - Sings Twinkle twinkle little star in fragments. Not sure if this was for effect or not.
3. A third whispering female that says:"...hear it...just relax..." (can't make out the rest)
4. A combination of male and female voices which say "Isaac" in differing speeds and pitches.
5. A male voice that speaks phrases in another language (Spanish or Latin?).
6. Another female voice that is very very hard to hear (chapter one after completing the maintenance bay and heading to the room where you place the data board)
7. A distant female announcer - sounds like she is taking about ship history but it is hard to hear

Most of these can be heard in chapter 1 but they do not always happen or last in the same way as returning to areas. In other words the whispers are on programming loops but just because you run to the bathroom you might not hear the whispers.

In chapter 6 the whispers seem to only loop in the West Chamber (and leading hall) to where you battle the Brute.

Also, if you close the menu and/or navigate with the R1 and L1 buttons you will hear "You're dead". At first I thought this happened on a specific door in chapter one. After more testing I believe it to be true. Now I understand that it is likely that I "want" to hear things in this game. That is why I keep testing them in order to be certain.

Again, all of this is my opinion. I am not here to convince anyone that everything I am saying is 100% true and they should cross over to my way of thinking. I am just sharing what I find and I hope it is entertaining to you. Things like this, though small, add greatly to the atmosphere of this game. I am far from finished testing all this and I still have levels to play with headphones on. But that will suck the fun out of the game.

I want to work on different parts of the game and shuffle around. Like from the story video I am working on, the glitch hunting, boss/enemy/level tactics, etc. It is more fun to just change gears here and there. One day I hope to be able to play this on a big screen in a dark room will about 12 speakers all around me. That, my friend, would do the trick!

Well now lol those are interesting, but my first spectilation is that you were hearing things like you know how when you think you heard something so you try to hear it again and your brain makes it up, or how the game is just so creepy that you start hearing things you want to hear or feel you should hear.

I can confirm on the twinkle twinkle part.

But you could be right on the whispers too, the devolopers said they laced the game with motion censors and visual censors so when you walk so far, near, or by something you hear a voice or something jumps out, or some cheep horror scare. Even if you look one way and you think something will come out from where you're looking it pops out someplace else.

I want there to be those whispers it would make the game so much more exciting and spooky to me.

I know for certian you hear whispers in the radio dish in chapter 8 but i can't make them out, they are really loud like they are being transmitted.

Keep exploring i will too these are really neat.

Those are nice points there , kudos.

However , the whisperings inside the Ishimura is what i believe , the Marker messing up with Isaac's head (i.e. the whispering you mention of "Issac" said in different speeds and pitchs and the twinkle twinkle song , i believe thats actually Nicole's voice you hear singing).

Thats my opinion. The whisperings are product of the Marker's hallucinations on Isaac.

Im really glad that someone is delving in the whole Dead Space universe when it comes to ambience though. Keep it up!

I agree with you on the voices. For all I know there were done by the Nicole Brennan's voice talent. It would be nice if someone could translate the male whispers. Also, if anyone here plays this on PC let me know if this is next idea is possible.

Since the whispers are on the sound effects track, I mute the music and voice tracks so I can hear the whispers clearer. The sound effect track is also the ambiance track. It is great for effect but it makes the whispers harder to hear. Is it possible to tweak something like this on the PC version? I figure it's a shot in the dark but who knows.

Just to clear things up though, I am not sweating over this. Things like this are great...on the side. Lately, I have been playing RE2 on my PS3. I love making replay value out of the old games

Hmn...i do play it for PC actually. Havent got it installed right now , but if the sound effects arent encrypted into huge compressed file bulks , it should probably be sorted out on .ogg files , much like Quake 4 and others ;if thats the case , that would be excellent since it would make things much more easier i think. Just play the .ogg files on media player or anyother .ogg reader until you get the desired whispers , which are clean from any other game sounds that might interfere.

That reminds me , I was in hydroponics the second time i replayed the game , where you have to kill a brute ; afterwards i hid in a corner and i had a whispering voice constantly saying "Jane Gauthier".I waited a few more seconds and the same whisper repeated itself. If you've seen the first episode of No Known Survivors ,you will notice that the name of the PSEC officer is Jane Gauthier.

*BUMP*

ok these were what i figured out from some of the whisperings ive heard so far. That english woman (with a very sexy voice *wink*) whispers all of these :

"Persistence may be labeled as obsession if you indulge and persist, you objectify the subject. Also be mindful of psychological rejection." - This is obviously related to how Isaac is obsessed with Nicole , i THINK!

"After graduating, she took a security management position with CEC in their space vessel assembly plant."
- Quite possibly refering to Jane Gaulthier , the PSEC officer on the first episode of the No Known Survivors minigame.

"Voice analysis of the audio log detects various indicators of positive communication and physical behavior."
- No idea.

"Genealogy and background report complete, sources verified, subject Gauthier Jane."
- Well.....duh?

"Her Grandfather manages the shuttle convoy and Gauthier's grandmother cooks in the east wing cafeteria."
- Gauthier's paternal grandparents reside in the populous zones in North Carolina.

"A desire for social interaction, physical contact, affection or support may lead you to make poor judgments of decisions in multiple areas."
- Probably related to Isaac.

Note that those "notes" are just my opinions.

I go to the options - Audio - and then turn the volume all the way down for the music and voice tracks.

I think you nailed it
I typed the ones I had in a word doc and I think there are basically 10 by the female. I refer to those as "narrative" or "spoken" whispers. The other class is more "haunting" or "singy" LOL.

What I would like to know is why Jane Cothia (not sure if spelling is off) is not mentioned in any logs. Is it just one of those easteregg tributes to past horror/sci fi titles? I am not familiar with No known survivors.

I am interested in the .ogg files you're talking about. If there was a way to only hear each individual whisper it would be much more fun trying to translate them. By the way, I tested the male voices backwards and came up with nothing. That is why I am sure there are in a different language. One of the male voices is from Dr. Mercer.

If any of you are interested in this stuff let me know. I have pretty much all of the whispers in a .wav format as well as the ones I can't quite understand yet. There is a time/section based one though that only plays after the maintenance bay area in Chapter 1. You get like 15 seconds to hear it and then it changes to a different ambience track. Try as I might, I cannot get this one to repeat unless I start the game over.

One more thing, can PC uses alternate the camera in any way? Think manhunt. I saw videos for that where PC users could alter the camera for more sinister and creative kills.

Here are a few more to add to the list.

"Search & Rescue"

"The following EIAC calculations have produced a low "brorility" (can't decipher word yet) of longterm romantic compatibility"

"Please review the following information to increase chances of survival"

Room under the tram (Can also hear other whispers)
"Hear it...just relax...(the following is undecipherable)"

I haven't taken the time to work on the ship announcer voice, which mainly talks as if giving instructions / history for the CEC. I think it is much harder to understand than the other whispers. It is so muffled and distant.
